To visit the website click >> Migration Museum
In June 2001 the Migration Museum Committee in collaboration with the Migration
Museum, has announced the launch of the website. The aim of this website
is to " collect information relating to issues of interest to migrants
and migration." Among the various sections in the site one can find
a section on the historical aspects of the Maltese migratory movements
that includes the first three chapters of an interesting publication, "The
Safety Valve" by Fr. Lawrence E. Attard. The Statistics section is
very well presented and one can get a quick indication of the post-war
migration to and from Canada, UK and the USA. This site remains a work
in progress but a lot of material is already available.
The Project
Professor Maurice Cauchi, a past President of the Maltese Community Council
of Victoria, visited Melbourne during December 2000 and January 2001. One
of the aims of his visit was to promote the latest project that he is currently
working on in Malta, namely that of setting up of a Maltese Migration Museum.
This project is the result of one of the recommendations adopted at the
Convention of Leaders of Associations of Maltese Abroad and of Maltese
Origin held in Valletta, Malta in January-February 2000.
While the project has many facets, the main one is the establishment of
a "Virtual Migration Museum" to be accessible over the Internet.
In an interview on SBS Radio, Professor Cauchi appealed to Maltese living
in Australia to provide assistance in establishing the museum. During the
interview he asked the listeners to think about the idea of such a museum
and how they could contribute to its establishment.
The material that Prof. Cauchi is seeking from Maltese living in Australia
includes:
-
Statistical information about migration and migrants
-
Pictorial – old photographs, or photos of important occasions
-
Oral – tapes of conversations, music, etc.
-
List of publications of Maltese abroad
-
List of publications about Maltese Migrants
-
Artists of Maltese descent – Visual material, paintings, sculpture, photography,
ceramics etc. (digitised or copies)
-
Personalities – information about important persons (see below)
-
Associations – information about existing and defunct associations (see below)
-
Historical writing – eg plaques, memorials, origin of street names etc.
Initially Prof. Cauchi will require this material in electronic format,
that is, digital photographs and information that can be transmitted by
email. Eventually, paper photocopies, photographs etc. will be required
for the exhibition part of the Museum.
If anybody would like further information about the project or had some
material that could be donated to this Migration Museum, they should contact
Mr Joseph Borg on (03) 9802 8332 or by email at borgles@hotmail.com. Mr Borg is willing to visit people who offer any relevant material, take
photographs, look at the material they have and discuss with them whether
it meets the requirements set by Prof. Cauchi.
