The MCCV offers the following community welfare programs


Maltese Community Aged Care Packages (CACP)

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services

Objectives

  • To provide planned and co-ordinated services for frail elderly with complex care needs.

  • To assist Maltese elderly people to live independently in their own homes or in the community.

Eligibility

To be eligible to receive a CACP, applicants must:

  • be of Maltese origin

  • be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Service as “hostel level”

  • prefer to stay at home rather than enter a hostel

  • need ongoing assistance in managing required services

  • live in any of the following areas: Brimbank, Darebin, Hobson’s Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Moreland, Whittlesea, Wyndham, Yarra.

Services Offered

CACPs provide a range of services tailors to the individual’s needs, including assistance with bathing and toileting, meals preparation or delivery, therapy and rehabilitation, transport for shopping, appointments or social outings, housework and gardening, home maintenance, injections and medications

Referrals

You may refer yourself to Maltese CACPs or be referred by family, carers, friends, your doctor or parish priest or other service provider.

Cost

You may be required to pay between $10 and $30 per week, depending on the services you need and your ability to pay. Accounts are sent out monthly and your weekly payment covers all the services you receive.

Home Visitation Program

Objectives

To provide friendship and support to elderly Maltese people who either live in a nursing home or hostel, or are socially isolated in their own home.

How it Works

The program is run by the Home Visitation Co-ordinator and covers several Melbourne suburbs. The Co-ordinator introduces suitable volunteers to act as friendly visitors to clients who are referred by their family, doctor, priest or other community agency.

Volunteers meet every two months to share experiences and discuss any problems that may arise. Full support is provided to volunteers.

Maltese Adult Day Centre

Objectives

To provide a social day out for frail or disabled Maltese people who are no longer able to join in ordinary activities, such as, going shopping or to a club.

Eligibility

Frail or disabled older people – People suffering from dementia (memory loss) – Younger people with disabilities

Residents of the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne including City of Melbourne.

Activities

  • Gentle exercises

  • Craft

  • Bingo

  • Outings

  • Memories of Malta

  • Mass in Maltese

Services Offered

At Sunshine Centre on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays (10.00 am to 3.00 pm)

At Parkville Centre on Thursdays (10.00 am to 3.00 pm)

Participants are collected from their homes and driven back home by minibus or taxi. Relatives may also provide transport.

Maltese food is prepared and served by staff. Morning and afternoon tea also provided.

Cost

$5.00 per day to cover expenses.

Maltese Healthy Hearts Program

Supported by ISIS Primary Care and the Heart Research Centre with funding from the Victorian Department of Human Services

Who Can Attend?

Maltese patients and their families (aged over 18 years) if you or your family member recently had a heart attack, heart surgery, angioplasty or angina. You may also benefit from attending the program if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease.

How does it help?

Cardiac rehabilitation can help you to:

  • feel better physically and emotionally

  • gain confidence

  • understand more about your heart

  • reassess you lifestyle

Group Discussion in Maltese

Group discussions on different topics help you understand the problems associated with heart disease.

Supervised Exercise

The light to moderate exercise program is planned to suit your needs. Designed to improve your fitness, the exercise session also helps you develop confidence.

Maltese Talking Book Library

Supported by VicHealth, Department of Human Services (Victoria), and the Talking Book Library Service for the Blind (Malta), this is the first Talking Book Library for the Maltese language in Australia.

Objectives

To provide educational and recreational opportunities for older Maltese people through a library service for people who are unable to read books.

What are talking books?

A variety of Maltese books have been recorded on cassette tapes. You may choose from a selection of Maltese literature, romance novels and historical information. Members must provide their own cassette players.

How does it work?

The cassette tapes are posted out to library members. Members are responsible for posting the tapes back to the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville in the envelopes provided by the service. Members may borrow up to three cassettes at a time for up to four weeks.

Who may join?

People who are unable to read a book due to:

  • poor eyesight

  • physical disability

  • lack of schooling

Cost

At present, all postage costs are paid for by the Talking Book Library Service. People may be asked to pay for the cost of any damaged tapes.

How to join

Contact the Maltese Community Centre at Parkville on (03) 9387 8922. New members will be asked to provide some personal details for registration and a medical certificate.

Other MCCV Initiatives

Community Development Officer (CDO)

The CDO assists frail older Maltese by refering them to appropriate services in order to reduce their isolation. The officer may be reached at our Parkville or Sunshine office.

Bingo Sessions

At the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville every Friday evening. Eyes down 7.30 pm. Maltese snacks available after 5.00 pm.

Men’s Group

This group meets every Monday and Wednesday at the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm. Maltese lunch can be bought at the Centre on these days.

Maltese Library

Library times are Friday from 6pm to 9pm. Books, tapes, videos and Maltese newspapers are available at the library.
